The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Bridge Department will soon start reconstruction work on the bridge over Mithi river at Mahim Causeway which falls under the G-North ward. The BMC has acquired all the permissions including the environment clearance certificate and the nod from the civic standing committee.
The reconstruction work will include widening the length of the bridge which will serve dual purposes.
Firstly, the increased width of the bridge will allow easy flow of water during heavy rainfall in the monsoon season. Secondly, the traffic congestion over the bridge will also reduce significantly.
"The project is believed to unclog the Mithi river and mitigate the water overflowing during heavy rains in the city," said S O Kori, Chief Engineer in BMC.
The Mahim Causeway is a vital link road that connects South Mumbai with its northern suburbs.
"The contractor has already been appointed and the work will start soon," added Kori.
Apart from widening the bridge, the existing gap between the two pillars of the bridge will also be increased for the smoother flow of water.
The work is expected to be completed in two years and the estimated project cost is pegged at Rs 87 crore, informed Kori.
Additionally, after the Supreme Court granted permission, the BMC has decided to start work in at least three bridges and one road-overbridge (ROB) during the financial year 2018-19. The work on these bridges was stalled due to the ongoing court cases on various legal issues.
These include the bridge across Mithi River in Dharavi, the bridge near Amarnath Tower building, Hancock Bridge and the proposed ROB at Vikhroli Railway station.
