MLC warns of Maharashtra water wars

He pointed out that the first case of fight over water turning fatal has already taken place in Ahmednagar district. On March 16, one man by the name of Pund, a resident of Ahmednagar, had pushed his younger brother into a well over some water fight. The victim died.

The circular had earlier directed the state police to be prepared for riot situations due to water woes. Shelar said that on March 9, the director general of police (DGP), Sanjeev Dayal, too had issued a similar circular.

DGP Dayal had earlier said that he had also issued a circular asking the police to be ready for such contingencies arising out of the shortage of water in the state. He has also asked the police to handle volatile situations in a sensitive manner.

The state is facing severe water shortage in certain parts of Beed, Nanded, Parbhani, Jalna, Aurangabad, Nashik and Satara, among others.

5 held for Sunday’s attack

The Dadar police have arrested five Maharashtra Navnirman Sena workers on Monday for allegedly pelting stones at the security guard’s cabin in Indiabulls Finance Centre (IFC) in Elphinstone Road. “Munaf Thakur, 32, Irfan Agawan, 25, Sudhakar Solkar, 22, Sagar Jadhav, 22, and Vikas Pathare, 42, were booked for rioting. We are going through the CCTV footage to identify the 11 missing accused in the case,” said Prakash Patil, senior PI.Patil added that they have beefed up security at the IFC. The incident took place on March 24 at 8.45pm.
