Mumbaikars may have to wait till December 2013 to take a monorail ride between Wadala and Jacob Circle.

“The target for the second phase of monorail, which will run from Wadala to Jacob Circle, is December 2013. I don’t see it being completed before 2013,” said a Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) official.

The MMRDA, which is implementing the project, had also sought permission from the railways to carry out constructions at three spots — Wadala, Mahul and Curry Road — where the monorail route crosses the railway tracks.

He said that the BMC had also agreed in principle for the setup of a sub- station for the route at Lower Parel. The monorail will also cross the Lalbag flyover and the APLR at a height of 22 metres.
The MMRDA plans to commission the 8.26kilometre long first phase of the monorail, which will run from Wadala to Chembur, before year-end.

This first phase will have seven stations— Chembur, VN Purav Marg, Fertiliser Colony, Bharat Petroleum, Mysore Colony, Bhakti Park and Wadala Depot.

Once completed, the Rs3,000 crore 19.54km-long Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk (Jacob Circle)- Wadala-Chembur mono railway route will be the world’s second longest route after the Osaka monorail corridor in Japan, which is 23.8km long.
