Industrialist Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries Limited has purchased a high-end armoured car. The BMW 7-series vehicle was registered with Tardeo Regional Transport Office last week.
"Last week, a high-end bullet proof car was registered with Tardeo RTO and it is not in the name of Mukesh Ambani but that of a company," said an official.
The BMW 7-series vehicle is said to have high security features and is among the range designed for high level of security.
Sources stated that due to security concerns and inputs Ambani was advised to have an armoured car instead of having a vehicle with security features. The vehicle is said to be a BMW 760i which is among the top line of cars sold by the automobile company.
"20% of the car price has been collected as tax for this high-end vehicle. 20% is the upper cap or highest percentage that RTO can collect depending upon the category and make of the vehicle," added the official.
Due to warranty reasons the vehicle was assembled with security features in a foreign country, which is also the reason why the highest percentage of tax was collected by the RTO.
Ambani's latest purchase is not the only bullet proof car on Mumbai's roads, some other prominent individuals too own luxury cars with similar security features.
RTO officials said that in the past too there had been registrations of cars which had bullet-proof features.
Given the kind of vehicle along with value-added fixtures in it, this car may possibly be utilised by the Ambanis themselves.
