In order to streamline traffic movement in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), a commercial hub that witnesses around 2 lakh people travelling daily in around 50,000 vehicles, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to make one-way traffic movement on several roads connecting several blocks inside BKC.
According to MMRDA officials, the pilot project will be first taken up in G Block of BKC, and later after having feedback on the same, roads connecting other blocks will also be made one way.
The pilot project will kick-off in the next two-three weeks in the G block of BKC, which houses Bharat Diamond Bourse, a couple of five-star hotels, the office of the Security and Exchange Board of India along with the Mumbai Cricket Association.
In case of G Block, several right turns will be restricted towards Kurla while exiting out of the G Block resulting in motorists having to take a left turn towards Bandra, later take U-turn in order to head towards Kurla from G Block.
Speaking about the project an MMRDA official said, "Once the pilot project takes off, traffic will be diverted with the help of traffic wardens and later it will be monitored with CCTV cameras. We have got approval for the project from MMRDA Chairman, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis."
Recently, the MMRDA had also requested offices in BKC to stagger the working hours in BKC to get some relief from increasing traffic movement of BKC. The MMRDA that is a special planning agency of BKC has also renamed internal roads in BKC for easy identification of the same by giving names like BKC avenue, BKC streets and BKC lanes.
According to MMRDA officials, the one-way traffic movement project also becomes important because of the ongoing construction work of several infrastructure projects in BKC.
The ongoing projects include two Metro projects namely DN Nagar-Mankhurd Metro-2B corridor underground Metro-3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) along with flyover connecting BKC with Bandra Reclamation and BKC-Eastern Express Highway connector.
In the near future, construction work of Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet-train project, Mumbai-Pune Hyperloop and International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) will also commence.
