Mumbai: Cloud covers to cool off scorching Sun from today

The maximum temperature recorded at Santacruz was 39.5 °C while at Colaba it was 35 °C.

After recording a spike in temperature on Monday with the mercury marching to 40.3 degrees, there was a negligible drop in temperature on Tuesday. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 39.5 °C.

However, according to weathermen, the temperatures from Wednesday are likely to drop slightly and Mumbai city will also most likely experience cloudy weather.

On Tuesday, the maximum temperature recorded at Santacruz was 39.5 °C while at Colaba it was 35 °C.

As per Rajesh Kapadia, a private weather forecaster who also runs the popular weather blog Vagaries of Weather, from Wednesday the maximum temperature might drop to 36 °C, which will bring slight respite from the heat; and as the week progresses the temperature could come down to 34 °C.

Cool northwesterly winds travelling from the Arabian Sea are now expected to replace northeasterlies. "Mumbai being a coastal station will keep observing high humidity levels and therefore the feel the bout of heat. Discomfort among the inhabitants has already increased manifold," stated Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency.

On Tuesday areas adjoining Mumbai like Virar (41.6 °C) Thane (43.3 °C), Karjat (44.7 °C) Palghar (42.3 °C) Wada (44.0 °C) Khopoli (44.4 °C), Murbad (45.4 °C) continued to be under the heat wave.

WHY THE SPIKE

  • Monday’s was the biggest surge the mercury has seen so far this year, as it breached the 40-mark to be seven degrees above normal 
     
  • It was the fifth time since 2009, and second year in a row, that the mercury topped 40 degrees Celsius on March 25 
     
  • Spike is due to strong northeasterly winds
