The heart of a mother beats for her children. Arnaity Minocherhomji (54), a mother of Hvovi who underwent successful heart transplant surgery at Chennai, was overwhelmed after being on an edge for many months as her daughter battled a heart disease.

Arnaity speaking exclusively to dna expressed, "Maharashtra government should emulate Chennai's model of transplant procedures. Our state too has skilled doctors and infrastructure for this procedure only that there is need of willpower. I have undergone a lot of pain and don't want others suffer. There are hundreds of patients in state like my daughter who are not aware about a heart transplant procedure."

After spending almost three months in Fortis Malar Hospital, Chennai, Hvovi returned to Mumbai on Tuesday after a heart transplant surgery. She had suffered from end-stage heart failure and had no chances of survival unless she underwent a heart transplant. She got a lifeline when all her parameters matched with a brain-dead person.

"Since last two years, my daughter's condition had only deteriorated. She was not able to walk even as far as 10 feet. She was not able to take head baths on her own but after this transplant procedure her life has completely changed. She walks around the colony. For small things she had to depend upon others, now she has started living a life like a normal person," said, Arnaity.

She added, "I am ready to spend time for creating awareness among the people and even ready to counsel families of brain dead patients to donate organs. Abroad such a surgery would cost close to Rs 10 crore but in Chennai this procedure cost Rs 25lakh. Apart from relatives, Tata Trust has helped us with this procedure."

Bandra resident Hvovi, a commerce student, was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart becomes so weak and enlarged that the supply of blood to the lungs, liver and other organs is affected.

"It is really a great feeling, getting a second life. I love Chennai. People there are very co-operative. I want to go out and meet the people, but to avoid infection I have to take care. Hence, once a day I took a round of my colony. Chennai will always be a part of my life." said, Hvovi.

"I really have no words to express my gratitude to the family which decided to donate the heart of their son. I got the heart tissue of a 27-year-old, the victim of a road accident, who was declared brain dead. Hats off to the family. I will walk around Mumbai with a heart from Chennai," she added.

This surgery was led by Dr KR Balakrishnan, director of cardiac sciences, Fortis Malar Hospital, who has performed more than 24 heart transplant procedures in Chennai.
