This project is one of the many activities planned by the school, which, in coordination with Gorai Gaothan Panchayat has adopted the entire Gorai village. Besides being a major tourist destination, this village has also managed to maintain the rustic appeal of a coastal village till date.

"A large number of tourists visit the Gorai beach and its clean-up will be the main highlight of our adoption programme. A core group of 35 students from Classes 8 and 9 will be leading the project. We will even encourage other students from our school as well as their parents to join the drives," said Father Flovi D'Souza, Principal of Don Bosco School and Junior College. He added that they would not only limit themselves to cleaning the beach but also conduct an anti-littering campaign across the Gorai village and interact with tourists as well as locals to encourage them to make the village and the beach the cleanest in Mumbai.

D'Souza said the students will also be meeting different communities residing in the village — fishermen and tribals — to get a deeper understanding of the issues plaguing them. "We have completed the formalities and our first activity will start with our students visiting the Gorai village for the first interaction on Tuesday," he said.

"We are very happy that the school has taken up this community initiative. The students will learn a lot about marine litter and ocean pollution during the cleanups and during their interaction with the fishermen. They will also get an insight into rural life and culture as Gorai village is the only place in Mumbai still rife with farming activities," said Rossi D' Souza, Sarpanch, Gorai village, who is also one of the co-ordinators of the project.
