Mumbaikars will have to brace up for more water cuts from October 25 as city lakes do not have sufficient amount of water to suffice the needs of the city till next monsoon.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) may impose a water cut of 20-30% till next monsoon from October 25.
"As the water content in all the six lakes is not sufficient to fulfill the water needs of Mumbaikars till next monsoon, we will increase the water cut from October 25 or 26," deputy municipal commissioner Pramod Charankar said.
Municipal commissioner Jairaj Phatak, who has been transferred to New Delhi in the Department of Panchayati Raj, suggested, "We can impose 30% water cut for winter season and 20% water cut during summer season."
"As the consumption of water during winter is less the water cut can be bit more during that period as compared to summer season," Phatak said.
The new Municipal commissioner will decide how much water cut will be imposed.
Currently, there is 9,83, 677 million litres of water in all the six lakes - Modak Sagar, Tansa, Vihar, Tulsi, Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa as against 12,73, 748 million litres of water last year, meaning a shortfall of 2,90, 071 million litres.
