Mumbai came third in disposing of cases in the one-day Maha Lok Adalat held on Sunday. Nagpur was first with the highest disposal of 84,599 cases, while Pune came second. As per data, 30,145 cases were disposed of in Mumbai.
According to statistics provided by the Maharashtra State Legal Aid Services Authority (MSLSA), a total of 2,40,179 cases were disposed of in a day across the state through the Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) forum. The disposal included civil, criminal, cheque bounce, land acquisition and cases under other laws.
The Adalat was held under the guidance of Bombay high court chief justice Mohit Shah and patron-in-chief justice DK Deshmukh. Deputy secretary of MSLSA VR Kachare said, “From last January to March 2012 we have successfully disposed of 7 lakh cases under various laws. The success graph is welcoming as it not only reduces the pendency but also helps people get quicker justice.”
Member secretary PN Deshmukh said, “The mindset is slowly changing. More and more are people are coming forward to resolve their disputes amicably rather than fighting it out in courts, where even personal equations among the parties often get spoilt.”
The chief justice had earlier said, “There are only about 13 judges for every 1 million people in India (the ratio is 13.5:1 million), as compared to 107 judges for a million in the US and 51 in the UK. Thus, these forums of ADR can prove to be very effective in reducing the pendency of cases in our courts.”
