Mumbai major fire: Trapped employees finally evacuated
A major fire broke out in a multi-storey building called, 'Naman Midtown' located next to Elphinstone station at 5:20 pm IST. Fire department officials have finally doused the fire. At least 20 people who were reported to be stuck in the building have been evacuated by the fire fighters. The fire department was able to rescue people stuck within the premises and they were sent to the hospital for further treatment.
The main reason for the fire has been attributed to the Welding work that was being carried out. More details are awaited from Fire Department and the BMC.
"As soon as the fire alarm went off, we ran away to safety. The fire department came instantly and started the rescue operations," said Chaya Kasar who works in the house-keeping department and resides in nearby Ambedkar Nagar Co-op housing society. Though different opinions surfaced, some nearby residents claim that the fire department took a long time to figure out the evacuation strategy as the back side entry was not feasible.
Heavy smoke had been emanating from the top most portion of the building as well as the lower portion of the building. The location poses a great risk to other complexes and markets. Elphinstone station is adjacent to the building and hence the fire posed a grave risk if had not been brought down immediately by Fire department officials.
From our dna office located opposite the burning building, we could see about seven people stuck on the terrace. These people decided to stay put on terrace as huge flames and smoke started rising upwards from fifth floor and they had no alternate way to come down.
Fire engines had arrived on the spot. Glass was broken to allow let the smoke out. Water tankers too reached the place to douse the fire.
The fire is believed to have started on the seventh floor however fire department are unable to confirm this yet. Welding work was in progress and could have resulted in fire, speculate fire officials.
The fire department has said people stuck on the terrace need not worry and that they will be evacuated. Six employees from Aztec Input are reportedly trapped but fire officials are yet to confirm this. And there has been no contact with them
More details are awaited.
