Mumbai: One dead, eight injured in two separate incidents of collapse

Incident of scaffoliding collapse at PMG colony Dharavi; autorickshaw damaged in the mishap

One person died while eight sustained injuries in two separate incidents related to part collapse in under construction buildings in 24 hours. The first incident happened on Sunday night at a 22-storeyed building in Dharavi and the second incident took place in under construction building in Naigaon Monday afternoon.

One person died while three sustained injuries after a portion of an under-construction building collaapsed in Dharavi's PMGP colony. As per the report from BMC disaster management department a scaffold collapsed in under construction building near Dharavi Bus Depot on Sunday at 10.38 pm. According to Dr Rupnar, CMO, Sion Hospital, Shahbad Ali Ansari (30) was declared dead, while Shamlal Jaiswal (60) and Sajid Khan(33) sustained injuries, and their condition is stable. It is being alleged that the incident took place due to the negligence of the contractor.

In another incident a portion of a slab of an under construction building collapsed in Nagpada. The incident took place opposite Nagpada Police Station at Peer Khan Street. Three fire engines along with a rescue van and an ambulance rushed to the spot. At least two-three people were believed to be trapped inside the debris. Mumbai Fire Brigade rescued three people and sent to the state run JJ Hospital. As per the information from the CMO, J J Hospital, Tajubul Shaikh, Abhimanyu Roy. Rafik Ahmad, Sufiyan and Hamjabin Allabin are admitted in the hospital and all are stable.

Meanwhile, the Dharavi Police have primarily booked the contractor and are investigating the matter. Suresh Patil, a senior police inspector of Dharavi police station said, "We are ascertaining the name of the contractor who was responsible for the mishap. We have registered a case of causing death due to negligence (section 304A) and causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others (section 338) of the Indian Penal Code."

At the time of the incident, no labourer was working on the scaffolding, which averted a major disaster, said Patil. Police said since it was Ambedkar Jayanti on Sunday, the construction work was stopped for the day.
