Kurla railway police on Wednesday arrested a railway employee for allegedly stealing an ATM card and password of a fellow railway employee and withdrawing cash worth Rs1.50 lakh from the ATM centre to construct a new bungalow at his native place at Manmad in Nashik district.

“Altaf Sheikh, 39, a labourer working in the Central Railway engineering department, was arrested for theft under the Information Technology Act. The police have recovered the money from him,” said Shivaji Dhumal, senior police inspector, of Kurla railway police station. He added that Sheikh was remanded to judicial custody for three days by the CST railway court.

Harinath Yadav, 36, a labourer, said that he had been temporarily shifted to Kurla and he had been sharing a room with Altaf Sheikh. Yadav added that the theft came to light when he checked his salary account. Yadav was shocked to learn that the balance in the account was just Rs460.

When he made inquiries, a bank employee told him that the cash had been withdrawn from an ATM using the card. Realising somebody else was using the card; Yadav lodged a complaint with the Kurla railway police station.

During investigation, DB Pable, police inspector, of Kurla railway police station collected CCTV footage from the ATM centre located outside Kurla railway station. The suspect had withdrawn cash worth Rs1.50 lakh 16 times in two months

When Yadav was shown the CCTV footages, he identified the suspect as his colleague, Altaf Sheikh. Sheikh, who had gone to Manmad, was brought back to the railway police station, where he confessed.
