The incessant rainfall in the past two weeks has filled dams of Thane up to 76.97 per cent. As a result, some of the dams are overflowing, compelling the district administration to open their gates.

For instance, on the morning of July 17, around 6.15 am, gate numbers nine and 10 of Tansa Dam were opened as the water began overflowing.

Even Bhatsa Dam has 72.62 per cent water at the moment and once it reaches 78 per cent, its gates will also be opened, possibly in the next two days.

The water level in the middle of Vaitarna has also reached the 218.20-metre mark. "Once it reaches 285 metres, the dam will overflow and with non-stop rains, there is a possibility of this happening in the next two days," says Aniruddha Sahatrabuddhe, Thane collectorate office.

"Hence, the villages in the vicinity have been informed to be on alert by the disaster management cell of Thane district," he added.

On July 16, Modaksagar Dam started overflowing and its gates were opened at 3 pm. The waterbodies mentioned are three of the seven lakes that provide water to Mumbai and Thane district. From June 1 to July 17, Thane district received 12,982.70 mm rainfall.
