The MIDC Police on Wednesday arrested two persons, including an engineer, in connection with the ESIC Hospital fire tragedy, in which nine persons had died. Two other accused, including a technician, are wanted in the case.

The arrested persons have been identified as site engineer Nilesh Mehta and site supervisor Nitin Kamble, arrested under sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others).

"The probe has so far revealed that there was no ventilator facility at the hospital, and in the new building's store room, rubber mats were kept in large numbers which caught fire and resulted in huge smoke," said a police officer.

"The contract to carry out construction work was given to Supreme Construction Company. Their central AC duct installation work was going on in the new block of the hospital, and while doing welding work, some negligence had taken place that resulted in the fire. Adequate precautions were not taken while doing the work," said deputy commissioner of police, Zone X, NC Reddy, adding that the role of the hospital is also being examined.
