Lakhs of people across the country will pay tribute to Dr BR Ambedkar on his death anniversary on December 6. This day is also known as Mahaparinirvan Din.
Students from the satellite city also visit ‘Chaityabhoomi’ near Shivaji Park in Dadar, Mumbai, to pay homage to the Dalit leader.
Rahul Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, which runs schools and colleges in the satellite city and Raigad district, has demanded an official public holiday for students.
Several students from Navi Mumbai could not visit the Chaityabhoomi last year because their schools and colleges are open. Visiting Chaityabhoomi on December 6 is an old tradition, and students should also visit the place to know more about Dr Ambedkar, said an official from the mandal.
“I have written to the chief minister and education director to declare an official holiday for students on Friday,” said Dr GK Dongargaonkar, principal of Satyagraha College of Rahul Shikshan Prasarak Mandal in Kharghar.
“Even though some plan to go to the Chaityabhoomi, lakhs of people from different parts of the state cannot visit on Mahaparinirvan Day because there is no holiday declared in schools and colleges. These students are denied of an opportunity of understanding the social issues and status of the people of Ambedkarriate,” Dongargaonkar said.
He added that the students will have an opportunity to purchase the books on Dr Ambedkar from the special book fair to be held at the venue.
Schools and colleges attached to Rahul Shikshan Prasarak Mandal are going to observe constitution architectures 57th Mahaparinirvan Din.
Satyagraha group of educational institute will provide free accommodation and breakfast to people coming to Mumbai to pay homage to the leader.
“The food will be distributed on December 5, 6 and 7. Moreover, schools and colleges will be remain closed on December 6 and the school premises will be utilised for the purpose of accommodation of the Ambedkarriate,” said Dongargaonkar.
