Five persons were killed and two others injured in an accident on the Mumbai-Agra highway at Shahpur taluka in the district here.

The accident, involving a truck, a tempo and a car, took place on Saturday afternoon, district headquarter reports said.

A tanker travelling from Mumbai to Nashik collided with a tempo, which fell on a car coming from the opposite direction killing the five, near Kalamb village here, reports said.

Almost all occupants of the car, a family from Navi Mumbai including Ramesh Patel (48), his wife (38) and son (17), driver Sunil, and an unidentified person travelling in the tempo died, while the driver of the tanker fled the scene, reports said.

Rescue work went on till midnight as the police and the rescue team had a difficult time extricating the bodies from the car which was badly mangled, they said.

Two other persons travelling in the car are seriously injured and have been admitted to a civil hospital nearby.
