Navi Mumbai mayor Sagar Naik on Thursday saved the lives of two youth who met with an accident near the Rajiv Gandhi flyover in Nerul. Both the injured have been admitted to Dr DY Patil hospital in Nerul and are said to be stable.
Lizu George, 19, was riding a motorcycle while Situ Khan was on his bicycle when the accident took place. “Both George and Khan are stable,” said Dr Shyam More of Dr DY Patil hospital.
Mayor Naik said: “I was travelling to Dr DY Patil hospital for a function around 6pm when I saw a crowd near the Rajiv Gandhi flyover. I asked my driver to stop the vehicle and on enquiry, found that a biker had dashed against a cyclist and both of them were lying on the road. Though there were so many people around no one came to administer first aid or help the duo. They were shifted to my escort vehicle and taken to the hospital.”
Naik, who has helped accident victims on two earlier occasions, said, “Earlier, I had helped two youths whose bike had met with an accident on Palm Beach Road. However, I could not save them then. While one of them died on the spot, the other succumbed to injuries in the hospital. Similarly, once while returning from Mantralaya, I had taken victims of a dumper accident to hospital.”
The mayor added, “It is very crucial that accident victims get treatment during the golden hour, so the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) will be stationing hi-tech ambulances on this stretch. These ambulances will be fitted with latest equipment so that even operations can be performed in these vehicles.”
