The navy has begun salvage operations of the frigate INS Vindhyagiri which is resting on sea bed at naval dockyard after colliding with Cyprus-flagged merchant vessel Nordlake in Mumbai 10 days ago.

"The navy has commenced salvage operation to lift INS Vindhyagiri out of water," Narendra Vispute, assistant public relations officer, defence, said.

Navy officials are salvaging the vessel at the naval dockyard and the process would continue over the next few days.

Decision on whether to decommission it or re-fit the vessel will be taken only after it has been salvaged.

"We will decide if the ship can be re-fitted only after assessing its condition," he said.
