The Western Fleet of the Indian Navy will form a special team to see how the salvage operations of INS Vindhyagiri can be carried out. On Sunday, the ship had collided with a merchant vessel. It was then brought to the naval dockyard and anchored.
Chief defence spokesman Captain Manohar Nambiar said, “We have officials with the naval dockyard who have adequate technical skills and will be looking after how the salvage would be carried out. It is also being planned how the complete operation will be carried out.”
Meanwhile, the Yellow Gate police have registered a case against merchant vessel MV Nordlake, with which INS Vindhyagiri collided, but no arrests have been made. A senior police officer said, “We have collected navigational data, communication data, and the log books of both ships. We will further ascertain whose fault led to the collision.”
He added: “The merchant ship’s captain has been called for questioning. We are getting marine navigation experts who will go through the data to help find out who was at fault. The directorate general of shipping is also conducting an independent investigation.”
The police will also question the people who were onboard INS Vindhyagiri when the collision happened. Family members of the crew were onboard at that time.
