From emergency methods of rescue and search operations to rope rescue techniques - students of Mumbai University and other universities in Maharashtra are undergoing a week-long training in disaster management from December 25 to December 31.

Around 1,300 students from across the state are participating in this workshop. From every district, 30 NCC cadets (20 boys and 10 girls) have been selected. “The students must be well-trained in all aspects of disaster management, from rescue to relief, so that they can be of assistance in any emergency,” said Mrudul Nile, director of students' welfare, Mumbai University.

Training modules will include methods of rescue, physical search methods, transportation of casualties and stretcher drill. Specific drills will train students in fire hazards, its mode of spread and extinction and flood rescue operations.

While the National Civil Defence College (Nagpur) is conducting the training, local fire brigade and disaster management authorities will also be involved so that students are familiar with local contingencies.

Students will also undergo first aid training, initial assessment of patients, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and other techniques, besides improvisation in an emergency situation.

“A certificate will be given to each student. Whenever a disaster occurs, these students will be ready to report within 24 hours,” said Rajpal Hande, director, Board of College and University Development (BCUD), Mumbai University.
