Winds of change seem to be blowing for students in blue and white of the 13 Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV) in the city in terms of both uniforms and school timings. After the reopening of the KVs in late July, the students will don new uniforms and spend an hour less in their schools, all thanks to the Right of Children for Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.
At the recently held KV Sangathana’s meeting under the chairmanship of human resource and development (HRD) minister Kapil Sibal, it was decided that instead of nine periods stretched over 6 hours 10 minutes, the students would have 8 periods spread over 8 hours 10 minutes. Also the gruelling mass physical training has been replaced with three periods per week for yoga, games and other physical activities.
Principal of KV Ganeshkhind, Kirti Sharma said, “Although there has been reduction of one period for students, the teachers now will have to wait 1 hour, 20 minutes extra for carrying out school-related work.”
She added, “Earlier, the school would function for 6 hours 10 minutes, but now for teachers it has to be 7 hours 30 minutes. Our timings are from 8 am to 2.10 pm but now it will be from 7.30 am to 3 pm for teachers.
Among other academic changes, there would be seven periods for English and Hindi languages from stand ard VI to X. For mathematics the number of periods is seven, eight and eight for standard VI to VIII and IX and X respectively. For science it is six, seven and seven for standard VI to VIII and IX and X respectively.
As expected, students seem to be elated over the move. Divyansh Pandiya, student of KV Ganeshkhind told DNA that the new uniform would make him look smarter. “The lesser number of periods would boil down to us spending less time in school and more at home,” he said.
However, another student Anand S Kumar, of KV CME said the lesser school hours would mean he would get less time with his classmates.
