Nitin Gadkari announces maritime summit in April to secure global investments

Minister of shipping Nitin Gadkari announced that it will be held between April 14 and 16 at the Bandra-Kurla Complex and is likely to be inaugurated by prime minister Narendra Modi.

The Maritime India Summit 2016 will be held in Mumbai in April to attract global investments in the maritime sector.

One of the focus topics during the summit would be 'Sagarmala' for port-led development, setting up of new ports and capacity augmentation of existing ports. Sagarmala was approved by the union cabinet on March 25 to modernise ports, improve connectivity, coastal community development and have port-led industrial development.

"The summit will be specially promoting the 'Make In India' initiative and aims to attract private sector investments through signing of big-ticket Letter of Intent/Memorandum of Understanding with major domestic and global maritime investors," said Gadkari.

The sectors that would be covered include green field ports, port modernisation, capacity augmentation, shipbuilding, ship repair and ship breaking, inland water transportation, coastal shipping, cruise tourism, maritime financing and cluster development, hinterland connectivity and cargo handling facilities.

For the summit, South Korea has been identified as the 'Partner Country' and domestic roadshows would be held in Vizag, Kolkata, Agartala, Chennai, Mumbai and Ahmedabad, and international ones in the USA, South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Netherlands and Dubai.
