While Mumbaikars have started receiving water with low pressure, there is no plan of water in neaighbouring city in Navi Mumbai. The Morbe dam that supplies water to the satellite city overflowed in first week of August.
Dr N Ramaswamy, municipal commissioner of Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner (NMMC) said that there is no plan of water cut this year.
Good rainfall in catchment area filled Morbe dam to the overflow level. The dam located near Khalapur in Raigad district, at Dhavri River which originates from Patalganga River, received good rainfall in the beginning and it overflowed in first week of August. The dam primary source of Navi Mumbai's water supply and it is owned by NMMC.
A senior official from the water department of NMMC said that the moment it overflowed, we had announced that there Navi Mumbai residents will not have to face water cuts in the coming year. This was second consecutive year when the dam was overflowed and residents will not have water cut.
The dam water level reached 87.85 metres on July 31 and the maximum height at which water overflows in the dam is 88 metres. The dam's catchment area has received 2,273.40mm of rainfall this monsoon season. "In the first week of August, the overflowed," said the official. He added that there are over 185 million cubic metres of water in the dam while the total storage capacity of 190.89 million cubic metres.
Due to poor rainfall in catchment area of the dam in 2015 forced the administration for 33% water cut. The water cut continued in 2016 too as the rainfall, though better, was not good enough.
