Jayant Pawar, the Pune-based owner of Metachem Manufacturing Company Pvt Ltd (MMPL), who has been chargesheeted by the Karnataka CID for alleged involvement in the Bellekeri iron ore scam, is well-known mostly for his involvement with the elite fitness industry in the city.
The son of the NCP supremo Sharad Pawar’s brother, Madhavrao, Jayant owns Solaris enterprise, which runs eight high class gyms in prime localities across Pune.
On Friday, Jayant failed to respond to repeated calls and text messages from DNA for a comment on the action by the Karnataka CID.
Most famous among the Solaris clubs are the 1,00,000-square-foot facility of Solaris Sports Club in Mayur Colony and the 35,000-sq-ft Solaris Sports and Leisure Centre (Club Solaris) in Mundhwa.
MMPL, the chargesheeted company, was founded by Jayant’s father in 1964 as a manufacturing unit for graphite and graphite-based applications.
According to the official website of the company, about 90% of the company’s products are exported to a large number of European and Central American countries.
A sister concern of the company is Ajay Syscon Pvt Ltd, a joint venture of the US-based Syscon International Inc, manufacturing metallurgical and process control instruments.
A familiar figure in Pune’s upper crust party circuit, Jayant’s Land Rover is also a talking point in the city. He is married to a German expatriate and has two children.
