De Souza grew up in Pune and later went on to work at the English Department of St Xavier's college after graduating from the University of Mumbai.

Eminent poet, fierce writer and an English professor, Eunice De Souza, passed away at her Vakola residence on Saturday morning. She was 76. She passed two days before celebrating her 77th birthday on August 1.

De Souza grew up in Pune and later went on to work at the English Department of St Xavier's college after graduating from the University of Mumbai. There she worked as a teacher first and then went on to become the head of the department, a career spanning over three decades. Her students remember her as a fierce poet, a prolific writer and an encouraging teacher.

Her first collection of poetry titled Fix was published in 1979 while her most recent work Learn from the Almond was published in 2016. Besides poetry and fiction, De Souza has edited numerous anthologies.

Apart from being a columnist with a leading daily, De Souza was also a theatre actor and director. She has also written a number of children's books and novellas. Her funeral is expected to take place on August 2 at Vakola's St Anthony's Church at 3.30 pm.
