In a good news for the strenght of 60,000 police force of Mumbai, the Maharashtra government has cleared establishment of Mumbai Police Foundation Trust (MPFT) for the construction of new homes, repair and renovation of existing housing units, financial help for medical purpose and aid to the children of police personnel to pursue education in India and also abroad.

MPFT will be established on the lines of the New York City Police Foundation, which will be a non-profit organisation. MPFT will be registered within a month as per the provisions of the Bombay Public Trust Act.

A BJP minister told DNA, “MPFT is the brain child of the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The objective is to put on fast track the development of new houses and repair existing ones without any bureaucratic hurdles. The situation of some of the buildings, which houses police personnel, is  quite bad and needs urgent repair and renovation. Besides, the construction of new homes is pending for long due to procedural roadblocks. MPFT will be able to undertake these activities in a hassle-free manner.’’

He informed that MPFT will be headed by the Mumbai City Commissioner while the joint police commissioner (law and order) will serve as its secretary. Its members include the additional chief secretary and principal secretary of the state home department, deputy commissioner of police (administration), former city police commissioner and two prominent industrialists.  ‘’MPFT will mobilize funds from various sources  including money deployed by public and private sector companies for Corporate Social Responsibility cause,’’ the minister said.

State home department officer said MPFT will focus on welfare of the police personnel in general. ‘’MPFT will provide scholarships and awards for the Mumbai police personnel and also their dependent children. It will also sponsor advance training for police officers,’’ he noted.
