Irritated with unauthorised sirens and horns on roads? Want the culprit caught? The state transport department has released the contact details of RTOs which you can use to get an offender booked by proving your case with a video clip.
According to the transport commissioner Sonia Sethi, citizens themselves can lodge a complaint about vehicles having unauthorised sirens and horns by recording a video clip with their mobile phones.
The information or data collected will have to be shared with the regional transport officer or deputy regional transport officer of the area where the vehicle was spotted so that appropriate action can be taken to penalise and remove the noise polluting device.
This move has been made by the state transport department after Dileep Nevatia (64), a Worli resident, moved the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in 2011 against sirens and multi-toned horns. NGT, in its order on October 11, 2013, had asked authorities to comply with it.
Various vehicles instal sirens that are allowed only to emergency vehicles like ambulances, police vans and fire tenders. The deafening and shrill sound of such sirens/horns inconveniences pedestrians as well as residents.
Anti-noise activists have welcomed the move to book the guilty with active participation of citizens as, they say, it will help in having a better environment to live in.
