Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria on Thursday transferred two more policemen, an assistant commissioner of police and an inspector attached to the traffic department, for alleged traffic mismanagement near Worli in the first week of March.

Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria on Thursday transferred two more policemen, an assistant commissioner of police and an inspector attached to the traffic department, for alleged traffic mismanagement near Worli in the first week of March.

The traffic police apparently had blocked vehicular movement near NSCI club when chief minister Devendra Fadnavis was attending a function there, resulting in a massive traffic jam. This incident had caused public outrage against VIP culture, leaving the government red-faced.

"My sincere apologies to those who were stopped by police unnecessarily. People in the state have always seen me stopping at traffic signals," the CM had tweeted in his attempts to soothe frayed nerves.

On Thursday, Maria issued transfer orders of ACP, South (traffic) NT Sherkhane and inspector BT Mukhedkar of Worli traffic division. The cops have now been moved to the special branch.

"Both of them were also responsible for smooth traffic movement on the day CM visited NSCL club. Following an inquiry into the fiasco, a report was submitted to the police commissioner. Based on it, the decision to transfer them was taken," said a source from mumbai police.

Earlier, deputy commissioner of police Keshav Patil was transferred for negligence. "The CM has taken a very serious note of the issue. While he had apologised to the people, he had also instructed the city police chief to take action against the guilty," said the source.

Additional commissioner of police (traffic) Kaiser Khalid confirmed the transfers. "They have been transferred on the orders of the commissioner of police." The officer refused to divulge additional details.
