Congress-backed National Students' Union of India (NSUI) here has sought a dedicated helpline number for college students to curb the menace of ragging, eve-teasing and attack on female students.
A delegation of NSUI from the city led by its president Suraj Thakur met Minister of State (MoS) for Home Satej Patil and handed over a memorandum to him on the issue.
"The need for the helpline has been felt in the wake of growing attacks on female college students in the suburbs (Goregaon and Bandra)," Thakur told PTI.
Often the students being teased or subjected to ragging hesitate to call the police. If there is a helpline number, students' would be able to address their grievance to the police, he said. The NSUI has also sought that the police should patrol the areas around different colleges to make students feel safe.
A meeting in this regard would be called by the Minister alongwith the students representatives from city colleges in the first week of November, he said.
