The fourth consecutive day of the winter session of the state assembly in Nagpur was washed out over the issues raised related to irregularities in irrigation projects by the Opposition in both the Houses.
The Opposition demanded a special investigation team (SIT) probe in the alleged irrigation scams. The parties were so aggressive in the demand that the assembly was called off after two adjournments and the proceedings lasted only for a few minutes.
Though the state government admitted to discuss the irrigation-related issues in the House, the Opposition wanted the SIT to be announced before the discussion.
The government contended that the debate on the irrigation issues could not be conditional and the Opposition should resume the debate first.
Public works department minister Chhagan Bhujbal said the Opposition was confused over its stand and the split between parties has led to their adamant approach. He alleged that the Opposition wanted the House to be adjourned as the members wanted to attend the Test match between India and England being played in Nagpur.
MNS, while distancing itself from the Shiv Sena and BJP, said it was ready for the debate as disruption only led to loss of business of the House. And, this reiterated the split between the parties.
Only two bills were cleared amid chaos.
Sena leader Subhash Desai, outside the House later, questioned why the government was not allowing a SIT, if there was no irregularity in the allotment of irrigation projects.
