The heritage review committee is likely to visit the heritage precinct of Shivaji Park and analyse the heritage value of each building there. Several residents said the proposed precinct site is neither in the list of the Archaeological Survey of India nor do the structures have any cultural or historic value.
The committee, headed by Dinesh Afzalpurkar, former chief secretary of state, said the committee is supposed to look into all the objections and suggestions before preparing a report on the matter and submitting it to the BMC and the state.
Afzalpurkar said the committee may visit the buildings to assess their heritage value before submitting the report. The report is supposed to be placed before the Bombay High Court before January 31, 2014.
There are close to 200 buildings and 10,000 residents in the proposed precinct.
At a hearing held in the G-North ward office in Dadar, Navtham Shah said Ganesh Krupa building, in which he resides, was to undergo redevelopment. However, that has been stalled because of the proposed draft.
Vijay Wakatkar, a resident of Vandan building in Shivaji Park, said seven of its tenants carried out a structural audit, which revealed the building is old and beyond repairs. The BMC has issued a notice for its demolition.
Residents also asked what the committee plans to do about the three towers that have come up after recent redevelopment in Gowardhan Baug, one of the areas in the proposed precinct.
