An unidentified man on Friday afternoon assaulted and fatally injured a 35-year-old housewife, Sheetal Ovhal, at her residence in Kaleshwar Housing Society in Nigdi Pradhikaran area.
Sheetal was the wife of a junior engineer of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), Vinay Ovhal, who lodged a first information report (FIR) at the Dehu Road police station.
She was admitted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Nigdi, where she succumbed to her injuries at 9.30 pm. The police said Sheetal was alone at home when, around 12.15 pm, the suspect came to her house and told her Vinay sent him for garden work. , Sheetal immediately called up her husband on his cellphone to verify.
Even as Vinay was telling her that he had not sent anyone to the house, the call got disconnected. Vinay made four calls to Sheetal that went unanswered.
The police said that Sheetal was assaulted with sharp weapons and suffered injuries on her face, hands and head.
The deputy superintendent of police, Avinash Dakane, told DNA that Vinay called up his neighbour, Mahesh Baride, after his calls to Sheetal went unanswered. "Mahesh and his wife went to Ovhal's house and found Sheetal lying in a pool of blood," he said.
Dakane said the suspect did not steal any valuables from the home. "We are investigating whether there were other reasons for assaulting Sheetal," he added.
