Even after a year, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has failed to identify land for a slaughterhouse. The civic administration had to shut down its large animal meat market in Pimpri under the Indira Gandhi flyover last year.

The civic body had to close the market as it was close to the Pimpri railway station and the foul smell emanating from it had become a nuisance for pedestrians and motorists.

The PCMC is now supplying meat from the nearby Khadki cantonment, following demands for closure of the existing slaughterhouse in Pimpri where around 14-65 animals used to be slaughtered.

Around 6,000 kg of meat was daily sold at the market.
The PCMC needs around 10 acres to set-up a modern slaughterhouse for big animals. But it has been unable to get such a place within the municipal limits.

PCMC veterinary officer Satish Gore told DNA, “We are desperately in search of land for slaughterhouse because the temporary arrangement also seems to be insufficient. We are making our best efforts to tackle the situation.”

The civic administration had identified several places for the slaughterhouse, but it faced opposition from the
local residents.
