Animal rights organisation PETA has written a letter to the city civic body seeking permission to put up advertisements on garbage trucks saying 'Meat Trashes the Planet.'

In the letter to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation municipal commissioner Subodh Kumar, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has sought permission to place sidewards ads on Mumbai's garbage trucks reading, 'Meat Trashes the Planet - Be Green - Go Vegan', accompanied by an image of a meaty Earth.

"Allowing PETA to use the Mumbai's rubbish-carrying trucks for advertisements could improve the health and welfare of animals, environment and the residents. Message would help make residents aware that the best way to protect the planet from environmental disaster is to stop eating meat," PETA Campaign coordinator Bhuvaneshwari Gupta said today.

"If you agree, the first ad could be launched on the Earth Day - April 22," Gupta said.

The letter further said the National Human Rights Commission had ordered closure of illegal slaughterhouses in Uttar Pradesh after blood and animal waste were found to have contaminating water supply.

In November last, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board had served a notice to the abattoir at Deonar in suburban Mumbai for violating water-pollution regulations, it said.

Consuming animal meat greatly increases risk for serious diseases like cancer, the letter added.
