A 32-year-old police constable attached to the Dehu Road police station committed suicide at his residence on Monday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Dnyaneshwar alias Mauli Hanumant Shinde (32), a resident of Dehu Road police line, room number 10. He hails from Shakarwadi village, Phaltan in Satara district. Head constable RK Nirwade is investigating the case.

Senior inspector Ram Jadhav incharge of Dehu Road police station told DNA, “Shinde had returned home from his night shift. Around 7.30 am, Dnyaneshwar asked his wife Ashwini (25) and his children, Shravani (6) and Piyush (5) to go for a walk on the terrace. After 15 minutes, Ashwini returned and found the door locked from inside. She informed her neighbour who forcefully opened the door and found Dnyaneshwar hanging from the ceiling. He was rushed immediately to Yashwantro Chavan Memorial Hospital in Pimpri and was declared brought death. He had joined the police force as a constable in 2003 and 2009, he was transferred to our police station. The motive of suicide is unclear as we have not recovered any suicide note.’’

“He had lost his father and brother a couple of months ago and may have committed suicide due to depression. We are shocked as he appeared normal while on duty on Sunday night and his cousin Sandip too is attached to our police station. We are probing the matter,’’ he added.

After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to his brother and the funeral will be held in his hometown on Tuesday.
