Gaurang Doshi, who has produced the Amitabh Bachchan-starrers Aankhen and Deewaar, was sentenced three years’ rigorous imprisonment on Tuesday for subjecting his wife to cruelty for dowry.

The additional chief metropolitan magistrate’s court at Girgaum convicted the film producer on three charges — cruelty to wife, criminal breach of trust causing hurt — whose sentences with run concurrently.

“I am extremely happy and no matter how much I suffered, truth has finally prevailed,” said Doshi’s estranged wife Madhuri. “This victory is a lesson for everyone. No matter how successful you are in life, you must treat your wife with the dignity and respect she deserves,” said advocate Satish Maneshinde, who represented Madhuri.

Doshi, who has pulled several gimmicks in the past to evade arrest and court appearances, remained absent for the final hearing.

Last September, Doshi had gone under a self-inflicted house arrest. Policemen had camped outside his Peddar Road flat for five days to arrest him for not appearing in court.

The court directed the Gamdevi police to issue a standing non-bailable warrant against Doshi and declared him an absconder.

“Doshi had returned from London as per schedule on June 30 and he didn’t know that the case was kept for final order on Tuesday. That’s why he was not in court. He is not absconding,” said advocate Rishi Bhuta, who represented Doshi. “The order was ex-parte and we will challenge it in the sessions court.”

In March 2005, Madhuri had filed a complaint against Doshi and his parents for dowry harassment and cruelty with the Gamdevi police. While Doshi’s father expired, his mother was acquitted of the charges.

The prosecution examined eight witnesses, including Doshi’s daughter, to prove the case. Madhuri told the court that she was “systematically humiliated physically and mentally” since the day they got married on December 4, 1994.

She deposed that while her in-laws tortured for dowry, Doshi never supported her. He assaulted her when drunk and even sold her jewellery to pay debts incurred because of his gambling habit. In 1999, she suffered a miscarriage because of Doshi’s behaviour, she said.
