Bharat Gite, a 38-year-old calligraphy professor at LS Raheja College, attempted to end his life in protest on Tuesday midnight, in front of Raj Thackeray's residence. His brother Sanket says Bharat was protesting the mental harassment that he was being subjected to by the college management and the Principal.
Bharat reportedly poisoned himself after sending a text to his brother, stating that he is ending his life in front of Thackeray's house. Bharat is father to a seven-year-old boy.
"He returned home at 7.45 pm looking very upset and left at 8.15 pm. An hour later, he sent a text message saying he is committing suicide citing mental harassment from the college authorities over a three-year-old issue," said Sanket, adding, "He has been taken to the ICU and is under observation. Further reports will shed more light on his condition."
Meanwhile, the MNS has expressed shock at the form of protest Bharat chose to employ. "People can approach us and take our help on issues that plague them. We are always willing to help, but they should not resort to such tactics," said Yashwant Killedar, vice-president of the party.
