‘Pune may have a cooler April’

However, India Meteorological Department officials refused to second the accuweather.com forecast or even deny the possibility of the mercury dipping in the days to come.

Although maximum and minimum temperatures of Pune have been on the rise for the last few days, accuweather.com that provides local forecasts for United States and over two million locations worldwide, has forecasted a dip of about 5 degrees in day temperature in the first half of April.

However, when DNA talked to India Meteorological Department officials, they refused to second the accuweather.com forecast or even deny the possibility of the mercury dipping in the days to come.

Sunita Devi, director of weather central, Pune, said, “The global model for forecast is not very accurate and especially for medium range forecast that goes beyond 10 days. Therefore, we cannot say firmly that the temperature will dip.”

When asked about the chances, Sunita Devi explained, “There are many reasons resulting in the temperature dipping and if any of them occur, the temperature will go down.”

Since land heats faster than water, the Indian peninsula may develop a low pressure area as the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea will be cooler. The cooler winds will flow towards the warmer land, increasing the moisture in the otherwise dry air and causing formation of clouds, in turn reducing the temperature. “This may happen in the coming days as the temperature is on the high,” she said.

The other reason, she said, is the flow of wind from the north west. There are disturbances passing towards Nepal and these may flow if the temperature in the central region rises. “The cooler air flows towards the warmer, this is simple science and this may help Pune see a comparatively cooler April. This dry season may attract moisture and wind to cool off the coming days of April,” she added.
