The city police on Monday felicitated two citizens for nabbing a 17-year-old teenager, who had snatched a gold chain from a senior citizen at Erandwane on Sunday.
Commissioner of police Meeran Borwankar felicitated Vijendra Bharat Gaikwad and Siddharth Vikas Sant at the police commissionerate and complimented them for their brave act.
Borwankar urged citizens and college students to help the police if such kinds of crimes take place in the city.
The victim Ranjani Satav (61) of Erandwane was going to a hospital around 12.45 pm to meet her 85-year-old mother when the suspect snatched her 20-gram gold chain worth Rs40,000 and tried to escape from the scene.
Hearing Satav’s cries for help, Gaikwad and Santh flung into action and managed to nab the chain-snatcher after giving him a hot chase. Later, they handed him over to the police.
Gaikwad (24) is a resident of Koregaon Park and works as an executive with Mobile Shopee while Sant (19) of Karvenagar is a standard XI student of Symbiosis College.
Gaikwad told DNA that he had gone to Erandwane for some personal work on Sunday. “I was standing near Mobile Shopee when I heard the elderly woman’s screams and saw the teenager running on the road. He was hit by a motorcycle but he stood up and started running again. I along with Sant chased him till the Karnataka School and nabbed him.”
Sant said he did not realise that the teenager was running with the gold chain. “I am happy that the police commissioner has felicitated me. It would definitely give me courage to help the police in future,” he said.
