A 26-year-old software engineer, Smruti Bhupendrasinh Kanwasi, on Monday committed suicide by hanging herself following alleged dowry harassment by her husband and in-laws.

The police have registered the case of abatement to suicide against three family members, including her husband. They have been identified as the victim’s husband, Bhupendrasinh Kanwasi (30), his father Surendrasinh Kanwasi (57) and mother Jankidevi Kanwasi.

A complaint was registered by the victim’s father, Harendrasingh Bhandari (62), a resident of Dehradun.  She took the extreme step at her residence at Roseland Rhythm housing society at Pimple Saudagar, under Sangvi police station.

The police said that Smruti got married to Bhupendra on October 17, 2010.

Smruti was working as a software engineer with a Talawade-based info-tech company, while Bhupendra works as a mechanical engineer in Chennai.

Police sub-inspector MP Sonawane of Sangvi police station said, “When she took the extreme step, her husband was in Chennai and her in-laws were in Dehradun. She was alone in her apartment in Pimple Saudagar,” he said.

Some neighbours of the victim noticed the body hanging a ceiling fan and informed the police. With help from the fire brigade, her body was retrieved and sent to hospital, and her husband was informed about the incident. No suicide note was found from the spot.

Bhandari alleged that his
daughter’s husband and in-laws used to harass her for dowry as they wanted to buy a flat in Pune.

“My daughter was tortured mentally and physically,” the father wrote in his complaint.
