Policemen are used to lathi charge, where they hit protestors or demonstrators with their long bamboo canes, but soon, over 150 policemen will subject themselves to the bamboo stick beatings.
These beatings will be part of the commando training that the Mumbai police will receive from Deepak Dubey (sees picture), a Pune-based commando trainer who will conduct a 15-day camp from February 14.
Dubey, who has learnt Shaolin kung fu, will train the Mumbai cops to help them become stronger mentally and physically training through unarmed combat and close quarter battle and killing skills.
“This training will give our men an aggressive approach during a terror attack,” said KM Prasanna, deputy commissioner. “The training will also prepare them to deal with terrorists without weapons,” he added.
Prasanna had invited Dubey to conduct the training sessions after he demonstrated his skills to the Mumbai police top brass on January 25.
“Dubey has trained many military and navy men to fight without weapons, so his training will help us and add muscle to our our existing training,” said Pradip Suryawanshi, a senior police inspector at the Andheri police station.
Dubey said he had trained different commandos units in unarmed combat operations, including the National Security Guard commandos. He added that his main aim was to start an international commando training centre in Mumbai.
