Rabies deaths in the Mumbai have dipped: RTI reply

The RTI states that while in 2009, the number of rabies deaths in city was 5 and 6 deaths in 2010, in 2017 there is only one death reported by the civic authority.

As per the Right to Information (RTI) application’s reply received by an RTI activist, from 2009 to date, there has been a decrease in the number of rabies deaths in the city.

The RTI reply was given by the civic-run Public Health Department. The RTI states that while in 2009, the number of rabies deaths in city was 5 and 6 deaths in 2010, in 2017 there is only one death reported by the civic authority. In 2018 to date there have been no deaths due to rabies in the city.

The reply also shows that a major number of deaths due to rabies are resident from outside the city. In 2009 while there were 18 deaths only five cases were residents of Mumbai other 13 who died were from outside city. Similarly, in 2010 while there were 14 deaths only six were from Mumbai, other eight cases were from outside city.

The number of cases has been decreasing since 2009. In 2017 total number of rabies deathwere four out of which one case was from Mumbai, other three cases were residing outside Mumbai. In 2018 until May, there hasn’t been any rabies death registered by the civic-run public health department.
