While on the lookout for suspicious people, the Dadar railway police nabbed a man for allegedly posing as a senior police inspector on Saturday.
Sheikh Samdani Basha, 39, a resident of Nerul, Navi Mumbai, was booked on charges of cheating and forgery. “We also recovered a forged Maharashtra police identity card from him,” said senior police inspector Narendra Kulkarni, Dadar railway police.
He further said that Basha has been remanded in custody till August 7 by the railway court at CST.
According to police officials, Basha had alighted from a CST bound local train at Dadar railway station when he was intercepted by police personnel patrolling the platform. When questioned Basha claimed that he was a senior police inspector attached to the Maharashtra police force and also showed them his identity card. Suspecting foul play, the police officials checked the card and found it to be bogus. When the police searched his house, they found two monograms of the Maharashtra police.
“During interrogation, Basha said that he was originally from Cudappah district in Andhra Pradesh and was living in Mumbai with his family for 20 years,” said sub-inspector Baba Bansode, Dadar railway police.
Basha also said that he earlier worked as a security guard for Hindustan Security Force at Charni Road in 2006. He also worked as a watchman in a school at Vashi.
“His wife works as a house maid in Navi Mumbai. Also, he has four sons who are studying in Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh. He currently stays with his wife and five-year- old daughter at Nerul,” said Bansode.
