The resolution, which was moved by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, came after a heated discussion over the Centre’s offer of just four acres of the land for the memorial.

The Maharashtra state assembly and council on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution asking the central government to hand over the entire 12.5 acre Indu Mills land to the state government for the construction of a memorial of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.

The resolution, which was moved by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, came after a heated discussion over the Centre’s offer of just four acres of the land for the memorial. The resolution said the Centre should hand over the entire land, which in the first place belonged to the state government, at no cost and the state would take the responsibility of building a memorial.

Indu Mills is located next to Chaityabhoomi at Dadar. Over the years, Chaityabhoomi has become a pilgrimage spot for lakhs of followers and a demand has been growing for a memorial and museum dedicated to the architect of the Constitution and a park for visitors.
