A woman writes a ‘Right To Pee’ message on a wall near Swastik Chambers in Chembur on Monday

One of the core members of the movement, Mumtaj Sheikh, said, "On women's day, we want to appeal to men to stop using these spots and use public urinals which are for free, as we have none for us."

Women associated with the 'Right to Pee' movement are painting the city's 'identified' pee-prone spots. Starting their pilot with Chembur station, they are going to continue this campaign in the area for three days.

One of the core members of the movement, Mumtaj Sheikh, said, "On women's day, we want to appeal to men to stop using these spots and use public urinals which are for free, as we have none for us."

A group of 30 women and three men, who are painting these spaces, were seen writing a tagline in Marathi: Mokle wha pan yogya thikani (pee but at the right places). "We will also be painting 'we understand you don't have a place to pee at a certain distance, however, we have none; so kindly join hands with us in our campaign'." Besides this, they will also stick posters and distribute pamphlets.

Reasoning about the motive of this campaign, Sheikh said, "It is not only men who are peeing on the streets or in secluded spots; often, kids living in slums near railway stations or highways come out to piss in the open, they are prone to accidents too."

"We are using Chembur as a pilot ward. Based on the response, we will identify more such spots across wards and paint them."

Earlier, they have, in several ways tried to raise awareness about the issue of pissing in public. One such campaign got a phenomenal response — 50,000 signatures and 2,500 postcards written to the standing committee of the civic body as an appeal to increase awareness on the issue.
