The prices of vegetables in city markets have skyrocketed, sending housewives ina tizzy. The hike in diesel prices coupled with erratic supply of vegetables from other parts of the state to the city has led to the sudden rise.

A wholesale trader at Market Yard, Dipak Dighe, told DNA that the prices of several vegetables, including tomato, ladyfinger and coriander, have doubled.

Even potato, onion, cluster beans, string beans, cauliflower too have become increasingly expensive.

"Farmers who bring their products from neighbouring districts to the city have to pay more on transportation as diesel is costlier now," said Dighe.

According to traders at the Market Yard, there are several farmers who are unable to bring their vegetables due to high transport cost.

"So the supply has become erratic, which is also affecting the prices of vegetables," he said.

Sopan Shinde, a vegetable vendor at Vishrantwadi area, said the prices of vegetables are usually reasonable during monsoon.

"It is an exception this time. Customers express anguish, but we are helpless," said Shinde.

Surekha Bhadale, a housewife whose husband is working in an IT firm in Yerawada area, said, "The rise in fuel and vegetable prices has badly hit our monthly budget."
