Gone are the days when Shakespeare’s Macbeth used to rule school dramas during annual day functions. Gen Y is now choosing popular musicals over classics.

One school to take the lead in this respect is the Lilavati Podar High School in Santa Cruz. The school celebrated its annual day on Tuesday with students staging the popular musical theatre show Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat written by the team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

The school has in the past presented other musicals such as The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof, and The Sound of Music. But the Technicolor Dreamcoat proved to be a complete learning experience for students and teachers alike.

The best professional expertise was brought in to train students and more than 3,000 students participated in the musical. The students were shown the musical in their classrooms and had activities centring on various aspects related to it.

The show was held at the St Andrew’s auditorium in Bandra.
