In addition to this, schools of state and union territories have been asked to conduct a mass singing of the National Anthem at 11am on August 23.

With the entire nation gearing up to celebrate its 69th Independence Day this August 15, the ministry of human resource development has drafted a circular for state and central board schools to declare August 9 to 23 as 'Azadi 70: Yaad Karo Kurbani'. It has asked schools to encourage students to celebrate this fortnight in an appropriate manner.

The circular was issued on Tuesday to central board schools, while state board institutions are yet to receive it. It has instructions for schools on celebrating with their students from primary to secondary by taking up at least one activity. For the higher secondary section, the ministry has suggested that two activities be taken up. A list of activities too has been sent to schools along with the circular.

In addition to this, schools of state and union territories have been asked to conduct a mass singing of the National Anthem at 11am on August 23.

One of the activities that features in the list sent to schools is encouraging students to make greeting cards for the jawans posted on the border. These cards have been asked to be sent to the nearest or any APO to be forwarded it to the soldiers.

Students can also undertake a mass tree plantation drive. Apart from this, schools can invite personalities like writers, academicians or defence force (retired or serving) personnel who can make the children aware of the freedom movement of 1857 and the independence struggle.

Schools can hold competitions as well, like painting, elocution, freedom run, essay writing, patriotic song singing, and slogan writing, taking up with the freedom movement as the theme.
