Hundreds of innocent people are suffering in prisons under false charges of sedition as the government is trying to use the law to suppress people’s movement for their rights, alleged human rights activist, Dr Binayak Sen.
He was delivering a lecture here on ‘Social justice and people’s struggle for democratic rights’, organised by Lokayat and Dr Binayak Sen Muktata Samiti on Sunday.
Sen said land belonging to people was being grabbed forcibly for projects of big companies and whoever opposed the move was charged with sedition or for supporting Maoists.
“This trend is not only in Chhattisgarh. It’s happening everywhere. The government is using power and even resorting to violence to shut the voices of those who revolt against the system,” he added.
Sen charged the government of widening the gap between the haves and have-nots.
“Though there is foodgrain, the poor don’t get it. They have money for projects and advanced ammunition, but not to feed the poor,” he said, adding that most tribals and members of the backward classes are malnourished.
